I had been intent on replacing an older projection and did quite a bit of research. Initially I was sold on an LG. Then when I compared TVs side by side, compared features and then price, the Vizio simply POPPED. Here I am several months later and I am very happy with my decision. No buyers remorse at all. The picture is fantastic, the sound...the surround often times plays tricks on me, it's an excellent TV. I'll let you know if I feel the same a year from now. The next test will be longevity.

Exceptional Picture with Rich Feature Set

This TV is a wonderful buy in terms of picture quality, feature set and overall performance. Comparing it to a 3 year old Sanyo LCD, (720p/60 Hz), the difference is quite dramatic. The picture has excellent contrast ratio (roughly the ratio of the brightest white to the deepest black that the light panel can produce). This measure (if not fudged by the manufacturer, which many, many televisions these days are), "should" indicate how "brilliant", "alive" or "dynamic" the picture will appear. Do not, under any circumstances trust published specs by the manufacturer. Many are grossly exaggerated, and few, if any, state how these measurements are made. Some others are just plain advertized incorrectly. I saw two TVs at a store that listed two Vizio TVs with a contrast ratio of 2,000,000:1, when it plainly should have been 200,000:1, as stated in the user manual. Off by a factor of 10, but who's counting? Suffice it to say, this TV, with a claimed contrast ratio of 200,000:1, has a brilliant and dynamic picture. It is the sort of TV that if seen on a wall of TVs, will jump out at you for three factors: image clarity, color saturation and "dynamic liveliness" of the picture. Don't get me wrong, this is not a $2500 Samsung. Its motion clarity is not nearly as good. The overall picture quality is not nearly as good. The feature set, however, is every bit as good as the elite TVs. There are many outstanding and well implemented features on this TV. They include, but are not limited to: 1. 4 HDMI inputs 2. Analog Audio Out (3.5 mm headphone type jack) for use with wireless headphones and such. 3. Optical Digital Out for use with soundbars and older non-hdmi switching home theater amps. 4. The sensitivity of the TV tuner is very good, and the signal level and other info is available from a "system" menu. 5. WIFI and Internet Apps 6. Nice, but not exceptional remote (no back light), but has full QWERTY keyboard on back) The WIFI setup was quick and easy. It found the SSID of my router immediately and connected with no problems. Performance is impressive based on two measures: throughput and signal strength. The TV is about 30 feet away and one floor up from the router. I consistently see > 4.5 Mb/s from my 6.0 Mb/s connection, even during the evening. There is a nice speed utility built into the TV that shows the throughput of the connection. I had no problem streaming HDX (1080p from Vudu) or Netflix HD. There were no interruptions or pixellation for either service. There is a little bar graph and icon that appear briefly at the top right corner of the display which show signal strength (mine shows full scale). It looks like this TV's WIFI would see the router easily from the other end of the house (although this is an A-Frame open construction scenario). One Caveat: The TV is listed as 120 Hz refresh rate. It isn't really. As one other reviewers have noted Vizio plays a game with the refresh rate and while this trick does reduce motion blur, it is not truly 120 Hz refresh. Consumer Reports took note of this and lists this TV's refresh rate as 60 Hz. There is no "smooth motion" adjustment in the menu...for a very good reason, this TV does not have Vizio's traditional "smooth motion" technology. That's one reason why it is less expensive. It is also why the higher end Samsung that I own, and other higher end Vizios (with true smooth motion) are clearly superior to the M420SL when it comes to ameliorating motion artifacts that LCDs are so well known for. It should also be noted that some people do not like smooth motion, period, and turn it off, so I would not make a purchasing decision on this TV based on the 120 Hz shortcoming. Summary: A TV rich in features that are actually useful, with a strikingly beautiful picture at a moderate price. While lacking a web browser, its internet features and performance should more than satisfy those interested in Vudu, NetFlix and assorted internet widgets/apps.

Great for what I wanted

I really like the picture and had no problem setting it up. Did have a problem with the remote but VIZIO support helped and we worked it out but the keys still stick once in a while if it keeps up I will let them know and they will send a replacement. Have not used WIFI yet my internet access is not the best. Only one complaint that is when my husband uses the head phones I have to turn off the TV speakers in order for the sound to go to the head phones, which means he is the only one that can hear it.

DO NOT BUY VIZIO!

I bought a vizio m3d421sr and it died after 15 months. Of course it is past the warranty, and after contacting vizio both by phone and email, they WOULD NOT REPAIR IT even if I wanted to pay for the repair! I was told to call a 3rd party repair company they recommended. That 3rd party repair would not even offer me a repair because they were "out of parts" but told me that they usually charge $350 for a repair, when a new one costs $600. OUTRAGEOUS! I have seen nothing but problems with this model and with similar Vizio TV's. They will have the white vizio logo light on, but will not turn on. I used to recommend Vizio, for their price and the overall top of the line technology at a reasonable price. Not anymore! DO NOT BUY VIZIO! I can am very upset and mad at Vizio for wasting my money! GET A LG, or SAMSUNG even if you have to spend more money!

Picture can't be beat

First off, the picture is amazing. It's clear, crisp and I'm only on antenna tv. The sound is very good, as well as the options. The only thing that I can't do is set the time correctly because it has to be connected to the internet to do that. (I found out by calling Vizio support) Vizio support was easy to get to, they were helpful and I have no complaints. I've only had this TV for about a week now but if I needed another 42 inch TV, I'd get this one again. I suggest you download and read the user manual to get to know it. If or when I can get it to connect to my wifi, I'll be even more happy with it but to date, Century Link doesn't offer the speed I'd need. There's times I can't even get over .85 mb/s! If you have a faster wifi, I'm sure you'd love this TV, too.

A lot of TV with excellent picture for the money.

It was very easy to set up, and I am no techie. The help line actually had nice people that spoke English. I spoke to Bryan in the Monroe store and he was very helpful in making the decision of which features I needed in a TV. I bought it in the Wadesboro store where everyone was so nice, they could not do enough to help (thanks Tanya for going above and beyond). I set it up expecting to go back for the sound bar but I don't feel the need to - the sound is great. The picture is clear and the colors are amazing.

very, very good television

We decided to buy this television based on size, price, and the reviews here; we have not been disappointed. The wi-fi works well with our home network, USB ports function well with either a thumb drive or external hard drive, although it takes the unit a while to recognize all of the files on a larger drive (we have a 2Tb drive on our network). Picture quality is excellent. Delivery was made the day we were told to expect it.

Excellent TV for a great price

We have enjoyed our Vizio M420SL for almost 1 month. The picture is fantastic, sound is good, and the features are fantastic. I read some complaints about the performance of the Smart apps, but we have had a great experience with YouTube, Amazon Instant Video and Hulu Plus. There aren't nearly as many apps as you'll find on a Roku or any of the Sony products (BluRay Player or PS3), but there are a good core group (Netflix, Vudu, Hulu Plus, Amazon, YouTube). We have connected the TV to our WiFi (802.11N) and it works beautifully. The only complaint I have is that the buttons on the remote are very stiff. This is probably good for the QUERTY keys since they're on the underside of the remote and the stiffness prevents accidental pressing while you're using the standard controls on the front. Otherwise, it's pretty easy to navigate. We're also very pleased with the size and weight. It's right around 2" thick, and only weighs 30 lbs., making wall mounting very comfortable. Overall, we're very pleased and sure hope it works this well for years to come!

Great TV!! Love It!!!

Review for: Vizio M420SL I've had the tv for about three weeks now and am loving it. I bought it to replace my 7 year old Samsung DLP. It connects to our Wi-Fi without any problems and we've been using Netflix and VuDu fairly regularly. The picture adjustment is almost infinite. The sound is good, but not quite as good as my old Samsung DLP was. The menu system is very easy to navigate which made the initial set-up was very easy. The remote was a little buggy at first as I had difficulty controlling the cursor during set-up. I believe the remote is Bluetooth so any number of my kids wireless devices could have been interfering with the signal. After having removed/replaced the batteries and having the kids stop using their wireless devices, the remote seemed to work fine. Despite the cursor/remote issue, and the difference in sound quality, I still give this TV a solid 5 stars. The color is excellent, sound is good, and ease of use is wonderful. The double sided remote is not a problem and I don't find that I'm hitting buttons on the opposite side of the remote. Bottom line: Great feature packed TV for not a lot of money!

Very nice

So far, so good. I brought it home last night it was very easy to put together. This TV is very slim but it is heavy. The remote has two sides to it and I really don't see the point of it not being lit so you can see the buttons if you are watching anything while in the dark. The buttons are very close together so its hard to "feel" them out. The volume is actually very good in my opinion for a TV of this size, however, if you need to watch shows very loud you may want to consider adding a separate speaker system. The sound was a little distorted to me when I turned the volume up to anything past 60 (goes up to 100) on the sound bar. Which for me would be too loud anyway but.... I'm just saying. Besides the sound and the remote features I do feel that I got my moneys worth and then some. For what I paid I really can't complain. The picture is amazing and looks even better to me at home than it did in the store. Of all the TV's on the wall, this one looked the best to me. I'm glad I took a chance on it and hope I can say the same a few months from now. I will revisit this forum later to re-post after I've had it for some time.
