Look at the product images in the description above. The assembly booklet does not relay that info. Using common sense, I assumed the two round plastic connectors that are open on one side, should face downward. I'm not sure if they will even fit the other way but I wanted to mention it. You don't want the opening on those facing upwards because they would collect dirt, possible rain, etc. Assembly is easy. An additional hint is to attach the connectors before attaching the fourth leg. In so doing, gives you wiggle room. After that, you can tighten all the screws. The table is nice quality. In regards to the umbrella opening, I don't intend to use an umbrella and the cover to the opening does come with it. In regards to those asking about umbrellas, I might suggest looking at light weight umbrellas and even beach umbrellas. I bought a set of the chairs also.

The table is wonderful for small balcony’s. It is able to hold an umbrella should you choose to use one. They are substantial enough to not blow over in a wind storm.

Perfect little cafe table for our screen porch! Love the solid surface table top for writing & projects. Paired it with the matching chairs. We bought 2, but 3 chairs would work also.
