I have purchased reading glasses from Sam’s Club for YEARS because they were inexpensive but the frames were solid and you could count on the quality of the lenses. In the fall of 2023 I was having difficulty getting the glasses I ordered because, as with many other products, there just didn’t seem to be enough to go around. I ordered them several times but the line item was cancelled because they were out of stock. Then as luck would have it I ended up with three different sets, all arriving in the same week. I decided to go ahead and keep them as I figured I would use them and at least this way I would have them on hand. Little did I know just how quickly I would get around to using those three sets (9 pairs of glasses).
I have purchased my readers from Sam’s for more than two decades now because they were inexpensive glasses but they were not cheap. For less than $20.00 you get three pair of readers with the spring frames. Anyone who has ever cheaped out and purchased glasses without this feature can probably tell you they regret it. That simple feature, the spring, helps your glassses keep their shape. Without the spring, sooner rather than later, you will find that the frame is stretching out and you need to stop by the optometrist and have the frame adjusted, either that or spend A LOT of time pushing your glasses back up on your nose. The readers sold at Sam’s now still come with the spring frame which is the ONLY REASON why the glasses still earn two stars from me, well one for the spring and one star for the lenses.
The readers from Sam’s USED TO BE durable but now you DEFINITELY need to pay attention when you are picking them up and putting them on. I am a mature woman in my 70’s, with no grandchildren so I don’t have to worry about anyone touching or playing with my things. I opened a new box of readers on Sunday and by Tuesday I was taking out the third and final pair from a box. I didn’t drop the glasses, step on them, fall asleep while wearing them all I did was try to slide them off the plastic insert so I could sit down and read a book. Twice, without pulling or tugging, I lifted the readers out and once I ended up with just the arm and on the second pair I tried to put the readers on only to discover that the arm was broken off and there was no way to reattach it. I discovered from reading some other reviews that I am not the only person who has just had the arm come off the readers for no apparent reason.
THAT is my sole complaint with these readers. As with SO MANY other products, Sam’s Club/Members Mark has apparently switched to a different provider, in the interest of saving a dime(maybe a nickel) and in making that change the member’s are the ones who have to bear the weight. Will I purchase my reading glasses from Sam’s Club when I have gone through the last of these readers? Well, the lenses are still great, if you purchase a 2.5+ power that’s what you get. These are definitely not dollar store lenses which are usually plastic and can be like looking through funhouse mirrors. But it doesn’t really do you much good to have great lenses if you can’t count on the arms to stay on the frame. No I won’t be purchasing the Members Mark glasses any longer unless the club insists on some changes. Nor do I recommend these glasses.
Sam’s Club, are you paying attention cuz this makes me ANGRY!!! As members, we were able to purchase three pairs of readers for $19.00 or $6.33 per pair. Now because of the RIDICULOUS cost saving move you made, which DID NOT reduce the price of the readers (reduced the QUALITY of the readers but not the cost to the members) members, at least this member, will have to pay a lot more to get a pay of readers which are equal in quality with the readers you used to manufacture and selllas Members Mark. Yes, I have checked and will have to fork out $21.99 at CVS or Walgreens just for a SINGLE PAIR of Foster Grant. Thank you SO MUCH…for nothing!
