Great for whole house use after tornado

I just survived a devastating tornado in Chattanooga in April 2020. I actually bought this generator in 2013 for emergencies but had not used it much until now. When my areas grid was completely wiped out I rolled out the GP1500 and ran it for over 3 days to keep my house running and food frozen, Many of my neighbors lost all their food and with the Covid crisis going on that is a serious time as we are on lockdown here in Tennessee. The GP1500 powered my house and kept my family safe and fed and warm etc until power was restored. What a great product and it never flinched with the hot water heater, or HVAC etc running. All I had to do was be careful and not try to run everything all at once. Thanks Generac you saved us in 2020.

Great Generator

I have been waiting for someone to come out with a generator large enough to have “whole house” capabilities in a portable configuration. I am a self-employed semi-retired electrician and have installed a number of generators, but this one is by far the biggest and best. I bought this one for my own house, replacing a 12,500/9,500 generator that was not quite big enough to run my entire house, especially in the summer with AC. This generator, with 26,500 starting watts and 17,500 continuous duty watts, will run most any normal size house. The only drawback with this is the physical size and weight. It really is too heavy for even 2 people to lift. The saving grace is it's perfectly weight centered lift ring. I picked it up with a tractor and put it in the back of my truck just to fill the very large gas tank the first time. This really is a 5 star product from a well known and quality manufacturer of generators.

handles whole house

pro- whole house for me. 2.5 heat pump and any thing else I need in a power outage. Starts well; comes up to power right away. con- don't like the plug in underneath. My old 15,000 had it right out front. In my area we can expect an outage about every 2 months; sometimes lasting from 2 hrs. to 10 hrs. and even several days. Wouldn't be without my Generac.(P.S. I am a retired electrical employe)

A few disappointments with the 17500W generator purchase

I have not started the generator yet but in getting it ready I've identified a few disappointing aspects. First and probably the biggest disappointment is the requirement to measure valve clearance at every 50 hour interval. The owners manual informs you this is pretty complicated (without describing the procedure) and suggests you have a qualified dealer do it (...did I mention the requirement for every 50 hours of operation?). The generator came with a note indicating the unit is "shipped without oil" and they supply 2 quarts for the required 1.7 quart capacity. When I poured the first quart in, the oil level was well above full on the dipstick ….indicating the engine was not even close to empty of oil. I also found the assembly instructions to be near non-existent because the exploded view of the assembly was so small in the users manual; also - it did not reference torques for any bolts or wear lock washers vs. nylon nuts should be used. I also noted two wires stretched very tight across the oil filter - which needed to be disconnected and re-connected following a less stressful path. I truly hope the generator will work well despite these initial findings.

Great to run a home

We purchased this unit for Hurricane season. Low and behold we needed it this year. This unit ran our house, all electric, 1900 sqft, with no issues. We ran on this generator for 4+ weeks until power was restored. We were hit again with another hurricane a few weeks later and had to crank up the unit again for a week or so. This unit ran flawlessly and we lived as if we had full utilities. Now there are some downsides to owning this unit. It is heavy and can be difficult to move at times. It burns a lot of gas. We were going through two tanks a day, roughly 32 gallons of gas. Due to it's size you will need to be able to store it for later use. Taken all of the aforementioned in account, it is worth having when in the time of need.

Great unit with power to spare!

I purchased this generator after a three day power outage in 2011. It just finished its first tour of duty on a seven day outage here in Charleston, WV. It ran my entire house..including central A/C and even provided 120V service to my neighbor. It uses a little over a gallon of gas per hour but it's a small price to pay to keep our lives comfortable in 100 degree heat with no utility power. This is the portable unit to own.
