Good but pricey

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I was sent this generac generator to try and review. It cake just in time because 2 days later the oowpo went out due to a storm. This ran quietly, compared to other brands, and efficiently. I would recommend it if you can afford one!

Excellent Quality!!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I received this Generac GP6500 portable generatoras a free sample. I think the quality is excellent. I tried it out right away to see how it performed. It started on the first pull and was able to power all the essentials in my home. I am very pleased with the performance and quality of this generator thus far. I would definitely recommend this product to anyone.

Nice generator

Bought this for mainly pump water and freezer during power outage. Put it together and started on first pull. Ran great. Just a little loud. Loader than a lawnmower, but worth the money. Nice to have during those ice storms. Would of giving it 5 if it wasn't so loud.

Works great right out of the box

I was amazed on easy everything was and how well it was all explained. Setup took less than 10 minutes and you just have to fill with the oil supplied and fill with gas. Getting the gas took the longest time of the whole setup process. Started on the first pull and ran like a champ. It runs quiet and and with very little vibration. I purchased this unit because I am sick out power outages and this is the best investment made for that problem. It will run everything that is needed when your power goes out, to get you by without damage to your home or your pocketbook. Best Investment I ever made, don't know what took me so long to get one!

Terrific product for the money!

The GP6500E is a great product for the price I paid. This is due in part to the terrific price promotion from the retailer, but I still feel that this item would be a good buy even without the promotion. There were some minor problems in assembling the unit, but once I got it started I was very pleased with its performance. There was enough power to power most everything in my house, but what most impressed me was the apparent purity of the signal. I have two UPS units in the house which didn't like the voltage from my previous generator (they gave an alarm signal and shut down), but no such problem with the GP6500E. This performance I would expect from an inverter, not from a standard portable generator. In conclusion I am very pleased.

Great Generator if you can get it started and keep it going.

One reason I purchased this generator was for the ease of starting it with the electric starter when the power goes out. The first week I had it, it started right up, but once I removed the trickle charger that came with it for a couple days it wouldn't start. I figured it had a bad battery or a short in the system, so I took it to a Generac authorized repair shop to have it checked out and they said the battery was bad and replaced it. Sad to say the new battery was also dead after sitting a couple of days. I did some research on the internet and discovered that this Generac Model had issues of shorting out and causing the battery to drain and die. I installed an on/off toggle switch to isolate the battery when not in use and that fixed the shorting out issue. One other issue that I've ran into, is that this CO sensor is almost too sensitive, if the wind blows the exhaust back towards the generators CO sensor it will shut down unexpectedly, so I have to position the exhaust pipe towards the same direction as the wind is blowing. Now that I know what it takes to get this generator started and keep it going it's actually a really good generator and it performs well, it's just not user friendly.

Great Product, lives up to its reputation.

I have used Generac products for years during my career. In all cases my experience was positive. Recently becoming victim to a severe storm at my lake house, I found myself needing back up power. I went online to several retailers and found Generac at a somewhat near store. I purchased the unit and can say it performed as expected, zero issues. Assembly was simple, start up effortless. Ran without issue until power restored.

Easy start

We purchased our unit the day before Hurricane Ida hit the LA coast. Our old unit would not start so we had to get a new one. This was the only one available everyone was sold out. I am sure glad they had this unit. It was very easy to assemble. Hurricane Ida hit and the power was out for 10 days. It ran 8 to 10 hours a day and never faulted in any way. It was very easy to start, it ran everything I needed (except to central a/c). I just took it out of storage for the new hurricane season. I checked everything out filled it with gasoline and started on the first pull. Very very satisfied.

Can not start

I could not start my 6500. So I took off the carb. And cleaned it. After that it started right up. The next weekend I started it up no problem. This weekend, I tried to start it, no luck. I have new gas with stable in it. Does anyone else have this problem?

A workhorse

I bought THIS generator because of the past experience with the brand, AND because this unit had a larger engine than most of the similarly sized generators. The typical 15kw genset has an 18 to 22 horsepower engine. This model has a 30hp engine!! That extra horsepower means greater power margin for starting loads like HVAC compressors. I calculated that I needed 10kw, and this units 22kw starting capacity exceeded that substantially... But in my experience I need more than the minimum because if the hvac computer crashes because of voltage drop, then starting will fail. You mush have excess power during the starting of the compressor to keep the computers happy. So I picked carefully, and while this one has much more power than I require, the price point and performance thresholds were met by *only* this generator. So I did my first test running the whole house, and this generator handled the load with few problems, but the power was very noisy, very high harmonic distortion. Some things in the house ran fine, but things powered on transformers did not like the power. The home thermostat was inoperable, the computer in the dishwasher crashed, several of the UPS systems did not like the power and complained, and my smart LED lights were very unhappy. Sensitive loads did not like this generator at all... But once I got the thermostat bypassed, the HVAC compressor seemed to run fairly well, though the compressor was noisier than normal. So to meet my needs I decided to buy the largest inverter generator that I could fine to run the house and electronics, and the Generac GP15000E is dedicated to the HVAC compressor *only*. The HVAC blower and electronics run on the inverter generator where they are fed a true sine wave. I didn't set out to buy this much excess capacity, but I still paid less than I would have if I had bought a similarly sized whole home generator, and I have a reconfigurable power plant now so I can handle any need.
