These plates represent every major holiday, every graduation, baby shower, wedding reception, and even funerals, where family, friends, loved ones all gathered for one reason or another. They look like plates, like a compartmentalized and organized part of my life that I didn't know I needed, but they serve as a simple vessel for nourishment. These plates remind me of every potluck I've every been to: whether the food is good or bad at least I could count on these plates for a source of consistency. Every time I see one of these perfectly portioned pieces of eatery I hear questions from my mother's voice, from before I could make proper nutritional choices on my own, asking me, "you want this meat or that one? Oh both, good for you. No sweets until you eat a veggie, you want green beans or corn? How about mashed potatoes or potato salad?" Maybe it's not that serious but small relics like these plates, which will surely outlast my own lifetime, they give me a sense of comfort in the moment. They represent good times and great food, simply put.
