The paper (300 gsm) handles the water well. It has a nice amount of texture to make watercolor painting possible, outcomes beautiful.  The pan paints are rich in color and simply beautiful. The budding artist will be quite satisfied with this assortment.  The top of the pan set has wells which can double as a mixing palette. (If you're careful, you can GENTLY release the hinges, unsnapping the top from the base for easier use as a pan set of paint with a side palette for paint mixing.) I bought this kit 2 years ago and learned how to watercolor paint using this set! As my skills grew by watching watercolor artists' tutorials online, I bought more expensive, higher quality supplies to match my advancing knowledge and abilities. But this set is FANTASTIC. If you have ANY curiosity about watercolor painting, THIS set is the place to start!  Now I am teaching grandchildren and friends and I'm so grateful and joy-filled that this inexpensive, high quality set is available.
