Vibrant Dutch Hyacinths for Spring Gardens

Dutch hyacinths are the quintessential spring flower, offering a stunning array of rich colors and an unmatched fragrance. Their small, bell-shaped flowers are densely packed onto thick, aromatic spikes, making them a favorite for outdoor gardens or indoor forcing during winter months. These classic blooms are reliable and perfect for adding a touch of elegance to any space.

Planting and Care Instructions

For outdoor planting, plant hyacinth bulbs in the fall before the first frost. Dig a hole to the required depth, place the bulb pointed side up, cover with soil, and water thoroughly. Mulch in extreme climates for added protection. For container planting, bury the bulb three times as deep as its width. In colder zones (6 and below), protect containers by placing them near a house foundation or in an unheated garage or shed. After blooming, leave bulbs in place to allow clumping or reseeding, dividing only when overcrowded.

Indoor Forcing Made Simple

To force hyacinths indoors during winter, pot specially treated bulbs in containers and place them in a cool, dark location with damp soil for several weeks to encourage root development. Gradually move them to warmer, brighter areas as shoots appear. Alternatively, use a bulb vase or decorative stones to support the bulb, ensuring the water level touches the roots. Maintain water levels and follow similar steps for indoor container forcing.

Pre-Chilling for Warmer Climates

In USDA zones 8-10, pre-chill hyacinth bulbs for 6-8 weeks before planting. Store bulbs in vented bags at the bottom of the refrigerator, away from ripening fruits, and avoid freezing. Plant bulbs in informal groupings of five or more for the best visual impact. Hyacinths thrive in well-drained soil but tolerate various conditions. Water well during the growing season and fertilize at planting time and after blooming.

Mass Planting and Safety Tips

For large-scale planting, excavate the entire area to the recommended depth, work fertilizer into the trench, set bulbs in place, and cover them all at once. Hyacinths are winter-hardy and resist frost damage. Handle bulbs with care, as contact may cause skin irritation. Use gloves when planting and wash hands thoroughly afterward. Items are individually packaged and labeled for convenience.

Bloomed but colors were not as pictured

Blooms came up but the colors were not as pictured. They didn't come up early but in the same week as the late bloom tulips. So April 13 in west Michigan.

None of the bulbs came up. It was a hassle to get my money back. Would not buy bulbs from Sam's Club again.
