Gardeners in zones 6 and below should protect bulb containers by placing them near the foundation of a house or structure. In zones 3-5, store containers in an unheated garage or shed during winter.

Propagation and Maintenance

After blooming, leave the bulbs in place to allow plants to clump or reseed naturally. Divide bulbs only when containers or planting spaces become overcrowded. Propagate in the fall by division after chilling bulbs for four weeks in a moist medium. Dutch Iris bulbs can be planted in spring or fall, ensuring a site with reasonably fertile soil, good drainage, and plenty of moisture to prevent drying out during summer.

Mass Planting Recommendations

For a striking display, plant Dutch Iris bulbs in large groups of 15 bulbs per square foot. Gardeners in zone 5 are advised to add a 2-inch layer of mulch in the fall for added protection. When planting a large quantity of bulbs in one bed, excavate the entire area to the recommended depth, work fertilizer into the bottom of the trench, set bulbs in place, and cover them all at once for efficient planting.
