About this item

Product details

Introduction to Buddleia and Weigela

Buddleia, also known as Butterfly Bush, is a deciduous flowering shrub that is known for its long, fragrant, and distinctive bloom panicles. These blooms appear in late summer and fall, and their colors can range from blue to purple, white, orange, yellow, and pink. There are many types of buddleia available, from dwarf (compact) to tall. However, it's important to note that some varieties are considered invasive. On the other hand, Weigela is a tough, easy-to-grow arching flowering shrub that grows roughly around 4-6' high with approximately the same spread. It's excellent for general garden use, accent, mass planting, or hedge.

Soil and Planting Requirements

The ideal soil for these plants is porous and drains well, yet still holds enough water for the roots. If your soil is heavy clay and drains slowly, or very sandy and does not hold water, you can add organic soil amendments such as peat moss or ground bark. To prepare the soil, spread a 3-4" layer of soil amendment, add fertilizer, and incorporate together into the soil to a depth of 10".

Planting Process

When you're ready to plant, dig a hole and place the root(s) in the hole at the recommended depth and spacing. Cover with soil. If you're planting a large quantity of roots in one bed, you can excavate the entire area to the recommended depth, work fertilizer into the bottom of the trench, place the plants, and then cover the roots all at once. After planting, water thoroughly.

Care and Maintenance

While the plants are actively growing, they should be watered frequently and thoroughly so that the water will reach the roots. Mulching can help keep the soil cool and prevent it from drying out. For best results, apply fertilizer before and after flowering.

Difficulty to grow!

This butterfly bush and especially weigela deep pink flowers, you will have to soak them for a few days before planting. Right now, one of them is growing. Hopefully, it will continue to grow.

I wish I had read these reviews before purchasing. I planted exactly as instructed. Spent time and money mixing in good garden soil and peat moss (as suggested) to give it best start. The box says it's in dormant state, which looks dead, but will come alive once planted. I dug 10" hole (as per instructions), mixed in amendments, covered with mulch (also suggested on box) and watered appropriately. It's been 3 weeks and the same dried up brown stick is the only thing there. No life has begun. It is obviously a waste of $15 plus all the soil, amendments and mulch for a dead plant. I will never buy anything from Sam's in the future without reading reviews. Always purchase live plants, seeds, etc from a nursery or even somewhere like Home Depot/Lowe's as they will stand by their products and replace or refund for you.
