What Makes Hellmann's Real Mayonnaise So Special?

Since its early days, Hellmann's has always been real mayonnaise, featuring only a few ingredients. It gets its creaminess from just vegetable oil and cage-free eggs, with at least 50 percent eggs in every jar. Its signature tang comes from vinegar. It's also a remarkably healthy mayonnaise, packed in omega-3s and is gluten free. Hellmann's real mayonnaise is also certified Kosher.

The Hellmann's Real Mayonnaise History

Hellman's real mayonnaise got its start in 1913 when its namesake, Richard Hellmann opened up a delicatessen in New York City with his wife Margaret. By 1920, Hellman began selling his signature sauces, including his famous mayonnaise spread, already regarded as the best mayonnaise in the city.

Hellman sold two versions of his recipe, including one he regarded as the best tasting mayonnaise; his favorite version featured blue ribbons on the jars. The blue ribbon imagery remains to this day, as well as the famous recipe. Hellmann’s mayonnaise bottles and jars are now made from 100 percent recycled plastic
