Sourcing

It is sourced from sites throughout the state which feature climatic conditions, soils and topography that are ideally suited to Cabernet. This project stems from excitement over California’s diverse vineyard land, often in lesser-known areas, with the potential to produce exceptional Cabernet, places from Paso Robles to lesser-known areas in Lake, San Benito and Monterey counties.

About Caymus

Caymus Vineyards is located in the center of the Napa Valley. Primary production is Cabernet Sauvignon grown on low-fertility soils on both the valley floor and the mountains that surround the valley. Attention to viticulture details, some dry farming, high-density plantings (with some blocks spaced as close as meter x meter), thinning of the yield, along with healthy vines and harvesting at an elevated degree of ripeness—all of these elements produce a unique and singular style of Cabernet.

History

The name Caymus comes from the Mexican land grant known as Rancho Caymus, given to George Yount in 1836. This land ultimately became the town of Rutherford and much of the surrounding area that is used to make the Caymus wine now. Chuck Wagner and his late parents, Lorna and Charlie Sr., opened Caymus Vineyards in 1972, starting off with 240 cases of Cabernet Sauvignon. Today Caymus produces 65,000 cases and farming grapes remains the priority with the family farming about 350 acres of choice Napa Valley land. Caymus is still 100% family-owned and run, as the next generation takes on the responsibility of this farming and winemaking operation.
