What Is Ginger Ale?

Ginger ale is a type of carbonated soft drink that is flavored with ginger. The drink can be consumed on its own or used as a mixer with other beverages, including spirit-based drinks. There are two different types of ginger ale styles: golden and pale. The golden style of ginger ale was formulated by the Irish doctor, Thomas Joseph Cantrell. Meanwhile, the pale style of the beverage was formulated by Canadian John McLaughlin, the inventor of Canada Dry beverages. The pale style of ginger ale contains a milder, spicy ginger ale flavor than its golden counterpart.

A History of Canada Dry

Before the Canada Dry Winter Variety Pack, the brand of Canada Dry real ginger ale was started in 1890 by pharmacist and chemist, John J. McLaughlin. In 1904, McLaughlin perfected his formula for the "Canada Dry Pale Ginger Ale." This paler, organic ginger ale is made with natural flavors and contains a more mild ginger flavor than other ginger ales on the market. After McLaughlin's death in 1914, his brother briefly ran the business before selling it in 1923. Canada Dry became a popular mixer during the prohibition era in the United States because its flavor helped mask the harsher taste of homemade liquors. In the 1930s, Canada Dry expanded past its U.S. and Canadian markets and began selling the drink worldwide. Now, ginger ale is commonly enjoyed by many beverage enthusiasts all around the world.
