Daisies Buying Guide
What Should I Know About Daisies?
When it comes to creating colorful, fresh and unpretentious floral arrangements, you can't go wrong with bulk daisies. Daisies are often listed at the top of lists of popular flowers. They get their name from the phrase "day's eye," referring to this popular flower's tendency to close up in the evening and open back up to greet the sun.
While you might think daisies just come in the commonly represented form consisting of a white flower with long tapered petals and a round yellow center, the truth is that daisies come in many varieties and colors. Some of the popular types of daisies include:
- Common or English daisy: What most people think of when they think "daisy," these flowers feature delicate, elongated white petals surrounding a yellow center.
- Shasta daisy: Similar in appearance to the common daisy, this variety features similar coloring but the center is usually brighter and the stems can grow up to two to three feet.
- Gerbera or Gerber daisy: Brightly colored petals are the hallmark of popular Gerbera daisies.
- Painted daisy: Beloved by gardeners and butterfly enthusiasts alike, the painted daisy attracts butterflies with its colorful showy petals, fern-like leaves, and innate ability to resist and repel bugs and pests.
What colors do daisies come in?
Like roses, Gerbera daisies, in particular, come in a rainbow of colors, from bright and showy to soft and ethereal, including hot pink, fuchsia, sherbert orange, bright red, sunny yellow, soft light pink, cotton white and more.
Yellow daisies and white daisies, especially Gerbera daisies, are fresh, young and fun for casual and afternoon events. Daisies are beautiful components for your DIY wedding flowers, including for centerpieces, bouquets, corsages and boutonnieres. They're also lovely when mixed with other colorful cut flowers, such as tulips, calla lilies and spray roses.
No matter what your preferred color scheme, you can create a gorgeous daisy flower bouquet to complement it.
What is a novelty-colored daisy?
Novelty-colored daisies are simply daisies that are uniquely shaded. You can use these daisies to spruce up and add visual interest to your arrangements, bouquets and displays.
How do I keep daisies fresh for an upcoming event?
Most popular daisy varieties sold in the U.S. can last for one or even two weeks, if properly cared for. To keep your flowers fresh, full and vibrant for your upcoming special event, follow these flower care tips:
- When your flowers arrive, unpack them immediately.
- Make sure your intended container or vase is clean, then fill it with fresh, cool water
- Trim stem ends at a 45-degree angle using either scissors or a sharp knife.
- Place your flowers in the container and allow them to rehydrate for a few hours.
- Change the water in the container and re-trim the stems every two to three days.
- Don't allow any foliage (leaves, etc.) to remain below the waterline in your flowers' container, as this can create a breeding ground for harmful bacteria that can shorten the useful life of your daisies.
- Additionally, avoid placing your flowers near produce or in direct sunlight.
- To slow down the blooming process, keep the flowers in a cooler environment.
Flower food may extend the life of your fresh daisies as well. Make sure you use a formula made for cut daisies and other cut floral arrangements.
