Back in 1916, New York City summers meant one thing: going to Coney Island. Coney Island, the seaside gem of Brooklyn, drew crowds to the boardwalk amusement park from May through October. Concession stands flourished along the pavillion, inspiring local bakers and chefs to create easily portable food and drink to sell to the many visitors.
Nathan Handwerker, a newcomer to New York City by way of his native Poland, decided to throw his hat into the ring, using his wife's secret recipe to make jumbo-sized hotdogs to sell at Coney Island. With a $300 loan, a great product and big dreams, Handwerker opened the stand that made him a household name. Just a few months later, Nathan's hosted its first-ever hotdog eating contest. By 1918, Nathan's Famous skinless beef franks were a New York City staple. Before long, Nathan's franks became a favorite at baseball stadiums; by 1955, Nathan's Famous grew beyond Coney Island, opening the first of many restaurants across the region and later, the nation.
