How It All Started
The Frito company first got its start in 1932, out of the kitchen in Charles Elmer Doolin's parents' home. Doolin, at the time, owned and operated a confections company that sold a wide variety of sweet treats. However, Doolin wanted to add a salty snack to complement the sweet treats in his product line. He bought an original recipe for deep-fried corn chips from an advertisement in the San Antonio newspaper and began making what would soon become Fritos Corn Chips in the kitchen of his parents' home. Doolin, his mother, father and brother all helped make the Fritos original corn chips and would become the first members of the Frito company's board of directors. Nearly 15 years later, in 1947, Fritos Corn Chips were being manufactured and distributed from plants in Dallas, Tulsa, Los Angeles and Denver. With an increased expansion, Fritos began to manufacture and produce other varieties of savory snacks. By 1955, Fritos owned over 50 different manufacturing and production plants, as well as a number of farms in Texas that Doolin used to grow corn and other varieties of crops to use for the production of his snacks. Frito merged with W.H. Lay and Company in 1961 to become Frito-Lay® and in 1965, Frito-Lay merged with PepsiCo® to become one of the largest manufacturers of snacks and beverages in the world.
