What Is the History of the Bronco Buster?
The “Bronco Buster” was one of Frederic Remington’s first works, depicting the life of a cowboy during the 1880s and 1890s. It was also Remington’s first piece with bronze. The portrayal of the cowboy shows him attempting to stay on a rearing bronco, with a loose stirrup that is swinging, a whip in one hand and a fistful of the horse’s mane and reins in the other. The most popular of Remington’s statues, it has remained well-known and sought after for the last century.
Remington’s sculpture was first executed in 1895, and it was later copyrighted by the United States Copyright Office. It has now become one of the most famous pieces of American art in the world. In fact, Remington was able to present it as a gift to President Theodore Roosevelt. While the original continues to sit in the Oval Office, this version of the statue is a detailed replica that is often described as the most popular of Remington’s statues.
