What is the history of freshwater pearls and where are they found?

Unlike other gemstones which are naturally occurring in rocks, freshwater pearls are found inside mussels living in a freshwater source—the only gemstone from a living creature. Possibly the oldest known gemstones, pearls have been have been a symbol of beauty in many cultures for thousands of years—often regarded as a symbol of wealth and royalty.

What do pearls symbolize?

Thought to be formed when the moon meets the sea, pearls have long symbolized a love, purity, and protection across cultures. Commonly associated with the moon and the sky, Pearls are often envisioned alongside the goddess of love Venus, who also came from the sea. Pearls, when worn around the neck are said to take in the warmth of the heart of the wearer. In ancient China, pearls were also believed to protect wearers from fire and dragons. Their magical properties mix with a classic elegance perfect for any outfit this month.

What does blue topaz symbolize?

Blue topaz symbolizesloyalty, faithfulness, and constancy, which is perfect when giving this stone to a loved one. This gem represents eternal romance, friendship and deep emotional attachment.  Wearing blue topaz is said to guard against evil and bring a sense of calm, confidence and cooling. Promoting a calm mind and good health, during the Middle Ages, topaz was thought to heal physical and mental illnesses.

What makes topaz special?

Topaz is unique in that it comes in many different colors. Our favorite is blue topaz. The primary color is represented in several graduations, from light to dark—icy pale blue to majestic blue-turquoise. Blue topaz is the birthstone for December and also the designated stone for 4th  wedding anniversaries. Blue topaz also has few imperfections visible to the naked eye, making it a great choice for jewelry that sparkles richly.

What inspired this colour combination?

Two types of blue topaz and the addition of sapphires give this necklace a flattering, eye-catching range of color. Creamy white pearls add a gorgeous luster that enhances the light-refracting colored gems.

What inspired this design?

With freshwater pearls, aquamarine-hued Swiss blue topaz and true-blue sapphires, this necklace has an ocean-inspired appeal. Beyond the color, the attached pendant has a flower-like shape with a curved stem and asymmetrical gemstone petals.
