Toilet Paper Evaluation Via Scientific Method

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Okay, so maybe the title is a bit of a stretch. But when I received four rolls of Charmin Ultra Strong to review from BzzAgent, I thought to myself, how in the world can I write a useful review of this? Toilet paper usage is a highly personal and subjective experience. Still, there are certain attributes such as strength and absorbability which can be measured (in a way). This review will attempt to cover both angles. First, the subjective experience. We typically use a low-cost, store-brand, 2-ply roll. The Charmin Ultra Strong is noticeably thicker. As one other review stated, it is almost like a nice paper-towel in thickness and feel. I am used to using (and I am estimating here) 8-10 squares per wipe. With the Charmin, I could go down to maybe 4-6 squares and still feel “safe”. That said, it was tough to get a fair comparison, as not every wipe situation is equal. The Charmin was “stronger”, but by how much? The absorbability, measured in the number of wipes needed to feel clean, also seemed to favor the Charmin, but again, how can one compare from one bathroom visit to the next? For the second angle, I decided I would try to play amateur scientist and devise a couple simple experiments. My first go around was the traditional “see how much weight a wet square can hold” test. I took a square of both the Charmin and the store-brand, applied 4 drops of water (enough to wet the center, but not the edges), then applied weights until each square broke through. The results: the Charmin held 39.5 grams, while the store-brand gave out at 29.5 grams. Score one for the Charmin! My second experiment was a “wipe test”, something I hoped would be more representative of real-world use. For the sake of repeatability and general hygiene, I decided to conduct the test using lipstick applied to my arm (which seemed like a reasonable approximation of a heavy wipe situation). I then wiped each lipstick application repeatedly with a single square of each type until I felt it was removed. The results surprised me, and you can see them in the attached picture. The cheap stuff tore in a few places, but that part was expected. What I didn't expect was how much more lipstick the Charmin removed in each pass! In the picture, the Charmin in on the left and the store-brand is on the right. They've both been used to remove the same amount of lipstick, but the Charmin looks like a smaller amount because of the depth of the absorption. The Charmin basically removed the bulk of the lipstick in one pass, while the cheaper stuff took around 3 passes before the bulk was removed. Again, the Charmin is clearly the better product. So why only four stars instead of five? Well, based on all my testing, I am guessing the Charmin might save up to 33% in paper usage, but it is also significantly more expensive than what we normally buy and use. Provided you don’t mind using more paper, the overall experience is very similar. In the end, I think this adds up to a very good product, but not necessarily an exceptional one.

Extra Strong

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I absolutely loved this product. I didn't feel like I had to use as much as the other products I have used. It seemed like the roll lasted longer too. I was afraid it would clog my toilet but I didn't have any problems. I will be buying this product in the future.

Charmin Ultra Strong: Strong AND soft

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I am a Charmin user and recently received a package of Charmin Ultra Strong to try. I have been very pleased with the product, in that it not only has Charmin softness, it is strong enough to handle the job.

Charmin ultra strong

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] No false claims here folks, these tissues are really durable even when wet. I found that TWO pieces of Charmin ultra strong is enough for your messiest messes. The only downside to these tissues is that they aren't as wide as others, but in my opinion they more then make up for it in the strength they come with.

Better than the rest

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I don't normally buy Charmin Ultra Strong but gave it a try. Let me tell you, I don't know how I lived without it. I typically buy a competitor brand, not an off-brand but a brand I've been using for years. I consider Charmin Ultra Strong a step up, it's durable, strong, and comfortable. Pretty sure I'll be permanently switching brands very soon.

I feel clean!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] My wife usually buys generic toilet paper for the house so I have to admit I was a little excited to try Charmin® Ultra Strong. I knew that it would be immediately better quality than store brand just because of the name Charmin. I switched out the old store brand roll with a roll of Charmin® Ultra Strong immediately after receiving my Bzz kit in the mail. I can say that Charmin® Ultra Strong did not dissapoint. You really can feel the strength of the paper yet it is still soft. I really didn't use an excess amount because if you were to pull out too much you knew you did because of its thickness. Compared with a generic brand, you may initially think you aren't getting as much paper because the generic roll is noticeably larger. But because you don't need much, it last longer. I'm happy to report that I felt clean and fresh after my trip to the bathroom, just like the bears in commercial. I would definitely buy Charmin® Ultra Strong again. I may even be able to convince my wife to trade the generic brand for Charmin. The picture shows a roll of generic paper on the left and Charmin® Ultra Strong on the right

Why I tried to like this toilet paper but

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This toilet paper touted itself as a direct competition against my current choice of toilet paper. I use the 1000 sheet toilet paper from Scott's. This toilet paper proclaims to be stronger and use less paper than Scott's. My actual experience agrees with this claim. However it did run out much faster than the Scott's I currently used. Our household is a large six member home and we need the extra sheets or we are constantly buying more and more rolls. Scott's rolls are also cheaper. Another reason we prefer Scott's over the thicker Charmin is that the Charmin has a tendency to clog the toilet much more often the Scott's. It's actually very hard the clog the toilet with Scott's because the paper is so thin and dissolves right away upon impact with the water in the toilet bowl. Other than that I did enjoy the thicker paper from Charmin. Just not at the cost of price, durability, and clog ability.

Thank you for sharing your feedback with us. We will share your comments with our team. While Charmin is not expected to cause any problems in a properly functioning system, some backups can occur in the toilet itself if too much paper is flushed at once. The most common cause of pipe and sewer clogs is something in pipe that doesn't belong. Please give our customer service a call at 1-855-236-3353, Mon-Fri 9AM-6PM EST. Thanks for reaching out!

Quality toilet paper

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] At first glace I noticed that the Charmin Ultra Strong toilet paper was distinctively smaller than my usual brand of TP. The paper want super soft but was definitely strong as it claims. I noticed that I would use less paper dude to the great quality. Even though it was a little smaller in sizes I would definitely purchase the Charmin Ultra Strong because of its quality.

Not Bad But I'm Not Switching

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I use Scott Extra-Soft and while the Charmin was comparable, I didn't get more bang for my buck. The thinner Extra-Soft did the job with less sheets and the roll lasted longer. The Charmin is good, but not good enough for me to switch.

Wonderfully Made and top notch

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I love Charmin Ultra Strong! My wife always buys the thinnest paper and I have to use so much of it. We started using Charmin and we are not looking back! We use so much less paper in the bathroom. I highly recommend switching if you are not using this product already in your house. I normally don't talk bathroom tissue with my friends, but I had to share this one. I have encouraged 2 of them to try it. The outcome was exactly what I expected.....they made the switch too!
