So, like most folks, we've been trying real hard to save gas for decades. We own a Honda Civic Hybrid and a Honda Minivan. These new Hondas came with Bridgestone Ecopia tires. As far as I can tell, Ecopias have the absolute highest quality and best fuel economy in the entire world; we averaged 30mpg in the minivan and 50-60mpg in the hybrid.
Fast forward to this year... We needed new tires on the van, so I decided to try the Pirelli Scorpion Verde Plus. That was a big mistake. They look decent, but our fuel economy instantly dropped more than 35%!
Probably half of all tires now claim to be fuel saving or "Low Roll Resistance," and they charge 1.5 to twice the price of the cheapest tires. Like so many consumers, I believed I would make up the price in gas savings--while helping the planet. Wrong! If you're going to spend extra on a tire, you should either get the Ecopias or long-life tires. The DOT has been saying for years that they're working on a standardized LRR/fuel-economy rating for tires. Until then, DO NOT BE FOOLED INTO BUYING "LOW ROLLING RESISTANCE" OR FUEL-SAVING TIRES--UNLESS IT'S THE BRIDGESTONE ECOPIA!
In closing I will just add that these Pirellis are also generally poor quality. I've noticed that nearly all tires now have very weak sidewalls. Not only does this make most tires less safe and durable, it's also unsightly. Most tires make it look like you're riding around on donuts. Bridgestone, Firestone, and other high-end tires look and perform exponentially better, and make up most of their extra expense in fuel-savings and longevity. I will never make the mistake of buying slightly cheaper knock-off tires again!
