Member's Mark Whole Bay Leaves by Tone's are aromatic and fragrant seasoning leaves that make an oversized impact on any dish they enter. They have been used for centuries to add a distinctive flavor to rice and beans, especially in Indian and Middle Eastern cuisine. Their taste is less pleasant than their aroma, so when cooking with bay leaves it is better not to eat them and to remove from your dish before serving (though sometimes they do make a lovely garnish). The taste if eaten is sharp and bitter. But as with similar herbs and spices, the fragrance is different than the taste. When dried, organic bay leaves have an herbal fragrance and slightly floral nose. Though slightly different, it could be compared to oregano or thyme.

Are Member's Mark Whole Bay Leaves Dried or Fresh?

These are whole and dried bulk bay leaves. If you want to buy fresh bay leaves, you will have to go to your local market.

Can Eating a Bay Leaf Kill You?

There is a legend that bay leaves, if eaten whole, will kill you, but you can rest assured that is not true. You can safely buy bay leaves for your family. Bay leaves are commonly dried—as are these—and a dried whole leaf is an unenjoyable thing to eat. They are crunchy and rough, with sharp edges and a brittle, hard stem. This will not feel good in your mouth, throat or stomach. Or digestive system, for that matter, so it's still best not to eat them. However, it will simply be unpleasant and not truly life-threatening.

What Can You Cook with Bay Leaves?

Bay leaves are a popular spice and herb that are added to any number of dishes to increase the flavor and aroma of that dish. Much like any herb or spice, it depends on your personal preference, but the flavor works well when submerged within rice or stew, thick soup or beans and lentils, curry or saucy dishes—anything that needs to simmer and in which it can infuse its flavors.
