Description

Keep your beverages cold with help from the Maxx Ice Freestanding Ice Maker in Stainless Steel for Indoor or Outdoor Use (50 lb.). It's designed for commercial and residential applications.

How Does an Ice Maker Work?

For refrigerators, ice makers have to be hooked up to the same power source as the unit for operation and a plumbing line that will provide fresh water to create the frozen cubes. They feature an electric motor, a water valve and a heating element. Once started, ice makers go through a cycle that sends a current to the water valve that lets in just enough liquid to fill the cubed molds. Next, the machine waits for the water to freeze as programmed with its built-in thermostat. The heating element underneath the mold warms the bottom just enough to loosen the cubes, then the ejector blades are activated to push the ice into a bin.

In commercial ice makers, they will feature a metal ice tray that's connected to coiled heat exchange pipes. It has a compressor that drives refrigerant to the condenser that then releases it into an evaporator. This cycling creates a gas that cools the metal tray. Water is drawn from a sump pump that then pours over the chilled tray gradually to form clear cubes. Just like in a refrigerator, the heating element warms the ice and releases it.
