In a day when distiller's rye – which can have an unwanted bite – was the go-to grain for whisky makers, Bill Samuels Sr. (sixth-generation distiller), set out for a flavor that would let his new bourbon stand out in the crowd. He simply wanted a whisky he would enjoy drinking; one that was never bitter or sharp. After some trial and error, he discovered exactly what he was thirsting for. Bill found his ideal mash bill in the kitchen, cleverly testing mash bills through bread in order to quickly test recipes without distilling and aging. It's the red winter wheat that imparts the front-of-palate sweetness that Maker's® is known for. Sometimes the best, freshest ingredient available is an heirloom yeast strain that's more than 60 years old. This highly guarded microorganism has helped craft every bottle of Maker's Mark ever produced. <ins>Water Source</ins> The limestone shelf where the distillery is located is key to crafting the unique taste of Maker's Mark® – the only distillery with its own water source and watershed. Kentucky limestone filters out iron from water, which is unpleasant in bourbon. The pure calcium- and magnesium-rich water surrounding the distillery makes better drinking water and a better sour mash in which yeast can flourish. The cooler temperature imparts more flavor while keeping the wood from expanding and releasing <h3>Production Method</h3> <ins>Copper Distillation Stills</ins> Our gleaming copper stills are key to our double-distillation process, which removes most impurities for a more refined sipping whisky. Thanks to our friends at Vendome Copper &amp; Brass Works, every drop of Maker's is still made the same way as Bill intended. <ins>Barrel Firing</ins> The process of firing barrels opens pores in the staves and caramelizes the natural wood sugars. This helps give Maker's Mark those pleasant vanilla notes. But before the firing can happen, the cooperage (or barrel-building company) must "season" the new American white oak outdoors for nine months, plus one Kentucky summer, to remove the bitter tannins in the wood that would otherwise go into the bourbon. <ins>Barrel Rotating</ins> We rotate every one of our 525-pound barrels by hand to ensure proper exposure to the different temperatures around the rackhouse. This adds consistency from barrel to barrel while setting us apart from distillers who abandoned the practice long ago. <ins>Red Wax Seal</ins> Each and every bottle of Maker's is still hand-dipped in our signature red wax at our distillery in Loretto, KY., just like Bill, Sr. would have wanted. <ins>Aging</ins> Maker's Mark isn't satisfied simply setting a clock. That's why we age to taste, not time. It usually takes between six to seven years for the whisky to be ready. <h3>Awards</h3> Since its establishment, Maker's Mark has continually impressed critics, winning double gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2020 and 2021. <h3>Sustainability</h3> As a certified B-Corp, Maker's Mark is now part of a small but growing circle of global companies leading the way in creating a more sustainable future. The world's first whisky cellar is LEED certified, another commitment to sustainability. The vegetative roof provides significant environmental benefits. The native plants on the roof provide a wildlife habitat as well as a protection from day-to-night temperature fluctuations, naturally cooling the cellar and reducing our energy usage. Our warehouses in Loretto are all powered by solar energy - creating efficiency while letting nature help us in the aging process. <h3>Gold Rush Recipe</h3> This Whisky Sour riff replaces simple syrup with honey syrup, also known as “liquid honey”, to add a new richness and depth to the original. Honey syrup adds sweet depth to bright, fresh citrus and the bold, bourbon flavors of Maker’s Mark.
