In early 2011, the last dumpster was removed from the main brewing facility. The brewery now recycles or composts almost all of its “waste” with a variety of local companies. The fraction that can’t be recycled or composted is incinerated by a local cement manufacturer to generate energy, with the ash used as an ingredient in concrete. <ins>Ripple Glass</ins> Before Ripple Glass, Kansas Citians threw away 150 million pounds of perfectly good glass each and every year. To our dismay, this included millions of empty Boulevard beer bottles—lost forever, buried in local landfills. Area businesses use nearly 100 million pounds of recycled glass annually, so why almost no local recycling? Because there was no nearby facility to process the glass. And why no local processor? Because, in classic chicken-and-egg fashion, there was no local recycling. We finally got tired of being part of the problem. So, with the support of local companies and community organizations, we came up with a solution—Ripple Glass. Ripple’s state-of-the-art processing facility and innovative metro-wide collection system has given a big lift to glass recycling throughout Kansas City and the entire region.Ripple gathers over 700 tons of glass every single week from residents and businesses in the KC area and the surrounding region, and then processes it into usable materials for remanufacturing as new glass, insulation, countertops, and more. We’re proud to report that since its inception, Ripple has saved over 1 billion Boulevard glass bottles from landfills. <ins>Solar Power</ins> Our first 18 kW photovoltaic array was installed in 2011 on the roof of Brewhouse Two, and in 2019, we added a much larger 200 kW system atop our 24,000 square foot Canning Hall. This clean, renewable energy source reduces our dependence on fossil fuels and the electric grid, and speaks to who we are and our calling to serve as environmental stewards. Plus, it allows us to offer a free electric car charging station to employees and guests! <ins>Packaging</ins> Boulevard’s closed boxes are a unique piece of our brand heritage, and a key part of our environmental push. All of our cartons are produced using 70% post-consumer recycled paper, and all are 100% recyclable. Our case trays contain 100% post-consumer material, and are also 100% recyclable. From the Missouri-grown soft red winter wheat in our popular Unfiltered Wheat Beer to the local farmers who use our spent grain to feed their cattle, Boulevard strives to employ sound, sustainable, common-sense practices—what we believe to be “better business.” <ins>Green Roof</ins> One of the most visible expressions of our commitment is over our heads… literally. The green roof on our brewhouse and packaging building reduces our heating and air conditioning loads (lowering our energy consumption) by increasing the insulation value where it is needed most—on the roof. The surface also absorbs rainwater, thus reducing runoff, while sustaining a variety of plant life. I am not one much for lager. Its just too gassy and thin. It always seems to have no "body" to it for my particular taste. I much prefer the more full-bodied darker ales, stouts and porters that almost feel like you are drinking a meal. 
So, my thoughts on this Nut Cracker Beer. This is the 2nd year that I have bought this from Sam's. 
Why? Firstly, though not my typical beer that I buy, as it feels much more on the "lighter side" of the spectrum. But, it DOES have a darker, maltier beer flavor and color. 
It really seems to have that "perfect mix" of nutty, winter-beer spices and flavors without too much of the "fuller bodied" beers, but without the "full-bodied" beer prices. 
It is still a little lighter bodied than I would normally drink but yet, it is not overly gassy.
I wish that this maker would just take it, that one final step, towards the more full-bodied beer side of the "body-spectrum", but then, that may push away some of the those buyers who perhaps like beers on the lighter side.
Finally, this beer is deceptively strong in potency, which surprised me - a lot, given its % alcohol content. The alcohol-kick, really hits hard after just one bottle, about 1/2 an hour after finishing the bottle. Two bottle and its off to bed for you!  
SO, if you prefer a somewhat of a lighter beer, and you are partial to those more malty beers with Winter Spices, this Nut-Cracker beer somehow manages to find that perfect "middle-ground" excetionally well, where both the lighter beer drinkers and the more darker beer drinkers can share a beer out of the same crate - really, it is quite "the unicorn" for some. 
Not a perfect beer for my taste, but certainly a perfect beer for the season and for many other folks out there. 
For this really well designed mix of seasonal flavor, body and price, I give this beer a full 5 stars credit that it is due, and a toaste of well-done appreciation!  Cheers!
