Effortless Gardening with Daylilies

Daylilies are vigorous perennials that require minimal care once established in your garden. Adapting to a wide range of growing conditions, these resilient plants establish quickly and survive winters with little or no injury. Available in a wide range of colors, daylilies make an excellent addition to any garden spot, whether it's the perennial border, planted in large masses, or used as a ground cover.

Long-Lasting Blooms

Despite their name, daylilies promise more than just a day of beauty. Each flower stem typically boasts at least a dozen flower buds, keeping the plant in bloom for many weeks. The flowers open in the morning and die by nightfall, but with so many buds on each stem, you'll enjoy a constant display of fresh blooms.

Daylilly Soil Prep Instructions

Daylilies thrive in porous soil that drains well but still retains enough water for the roots. If your soil is heavy clay and drains slowly, or very sandy and does not hold water, consider adding organic soil amendments like peat moss or ground bark. Spread a 3-4" layer of soil amendment, add fertilizer, and incorporate together into the soil to a depth of 10".

Planting in Large Quantities

If you're planting a large quantity of roots in one bed, excavate the entire area to the recommended depth, work fertilizer into the bottom of the trench, place plants then cover roots all at once. Water thoroughly at planting. While actively growing, water frequently and thoroughly so that water will reach the roots. Mulch to keep the soil cool and to prevent the soil from drying out. Apply fertilizer before and after flowering.
