About this item

Product details

Introduction to Aquilegia

Aquilegia, also known as columbine, is a clump-forming perennial that originally hails from Europe but has since naturalized to parts of North America. This plant is known for its unique and dainty blooms that come in a wide array of colors. Not only is Aquilegia a visual delight, but it's also deer and critter resistant, making it a practical choice for many gardens.

Attracting Pollinators

One of the many benefits of Aquilegia is its ability to attract pollinators. Planting this perennial in your garden will draw butterflies and hummingbirds, adding to the overall vibrancy and life of your outdoor space.

Aquilegia Soil Prep Instructions

The ideal soil for Aquilegia is porous and drains well, but still retains enough water for the roots. If your soil is heavy clay and drains slowly, or very sandy and does not hold water, consider adding organic soil amendments such as peat moss or ground bark. Spread a 3-4" layer of soil amendment, add fertilizer, and incorporate together into the soil to a depth of 10".

Planting Procedure

When planting Aquilegia, dig a hole and place the root(s) at the recommended depth and spacing. Cover with soil. If you're planting a large quantity of roots in one bed, excavate the entire area to the recommended depth, work fertilizer into the bottom of the trench, place the plants, and then cover the roots all at once. Water thoroughly at planting.

Maintenance Tips

While Aquilegia is actively growing, it requires frequent and thorough watering so that the water reaches the roots. Mulching can help keep the soil cool and prevent it from drying out. For best results, apply fertilizer before and after flowering.

All my plants were mostly dormant and just starting to put it growth. A bit on the dry side, so placed in a bucket with water and top dressed with soil and they've all leafed out beautifully.

All roots dead

I thought these would be so nice in the shadier part of my yard. Opened the package and the roots were all rotten, wet and bunch of bugs were in there, had to throw it all away. Waste of money

Roots are not viable

Complete garbage, they don't grow, and you're wasting your time adding to cart.
