About this item

Product details

Introduction to Caladiums

Caladiums are among the simplest Summer plants to cultivate, bringing vibrant color to any shade garden from Summer through to Fall. Originating from Brazil and neighboring regions of South and Central America, Caladiums thrive in open forest areas and along river banks. These tender tubers are commercially grown in the sub-tropics of Florida and Brazil, and they thrive in warm conditions.

Varieties of Caladiums

There are two main types of Caladiums - fancy leaf and strap leaf. Fancy leaf varieties boast large, heart-shaped or semi-heart-shaped leaves on longer stems. In contrast, strap leaf Caladiums are shorter and feature lance-shaped, narrow leaves with ruffled edges. Despite being primarily grown for their colorful foliage, Caladiums can produce one or two arum-like white flower pods with green or pink spathes.

Caladium Soil Prep and Planting

The ideal soil for Caladiums is porous and well-draining, yet still retains sufficient water for the roots. If your soil is heavy clay and drains slowly, or very sandy and does not hold water, consider adding organic soil amendments such as peat moss or ground bark. When planting, dig a hole and place the bulb(s) at the recommended depth and spacing. Cover with soil and water thoroughly at planting. If planting a large quantity of bulbs in one bed, excavate the entire area to the recommended depth, work fertilizer into the bottom of the trench, place bulbs then cover bulbs all at once.

Watering and Fertilizing Caladiums

While actively growing, Caladiums require frequent and thorough watering so that water reaches the roots. Mulching can help keep the soil cool and prevent it from drying out. For optimal growth, apply fertilizer before and after flowering.

Lovely!

These seem to be the only bulbs I have purchased that bloom. I love the colors and patterns on the leaves. Many leaves per bulb. They start blooming in early spring and last until winter in my Florida climate. I purchased these years ago from Sams and they were not nearly as productive, giving only 2 leaves per bulb. They also did not last nearly as long. They completely fizzled out after a season or two. I thought I would give it another shot last year and so glad I did. They did so well that I bought a bunch more for this season. All are doing great! So if you bought them in the past and weren’t impressed, give it another try. I don’t know what they did differently, but they are very much improved. Best of luck!

Give them a little time! Beautiful!

They did take longer than I am used to but they’re finally coming up and they’re absolutely BEAUTIFUL! Probably the best caladium bulbs I’ve ever bought, the colors are outrageous!

Worth the price compared to the competition

I've been buying this for about ten years now. My local Sam's hasn't sold them in store for the last few years, so shipping is the only way to buy. My only complaint is the bulbs have gotten progressively smaller over the years, but they still arrive alive, plump, and heavy for their size. For the price and convenience of shipping, I will continue to purchase.
