I don't understand the prevalence of negative reviews about the ‘book nook' component of the build. I would think most people, like myself, were interested in this set for one reason - the Balrog. When LOTR first became a Lego theme, we all wanted to see this. We all wanted one of the coolest and most unique terrors of Middle Earth. But for many years it looked as though that hope was lost. Now it's finally realized, against all expectation, and people seem to be upset that the random background stuff is somehow lackluster. Rather than complain that we didn't get to invest in an unnecessarily huge Moria backdrop just to get the Balrog, I'm grateful that Lego was able to come up with a clever way to keep the set piece rather minimal and actually potentially useful. Not to mention - I would argue - cost-effective. Yes, I know this set is expensive. So is everything. Especially licensed goods. The fact is they could've asked us to pay a lot more for various ruins we didn't need. Instead we got a Balrog and a dwarven scaffold we can use as a book spacer. Personally, I'm very happy with that.

It's a Balrog, Nuff Said

We all love LOTR and this set really pulled hit it off with the boys. for the cost... I'd give it a "C" just because it's known Lego has gotten expensive. But, for the reaction my kids gave when they saw the box and put it together... still an A+ reaction and they love the display. Not a complicated build, a little delicate but very good add to the collection.

pricey but still a great kit

It's very expensive for not very much. It's definitely an awesome looking set when viewed from afar but wasn't very impressive while building. You have to build the exact same thing twice when building the two "walls." It was very repetitive. I think my biggest complaint is the whip. It's pretty sad looking and cheap.

Looks amazing but.........

This is my least favourite of the new line of LOTR sets (although  that is a very high bar) but I'd still consider this a good set overall. 
 The price isn't great but it is better than the very expensive Shire set that was released earlier this year. Only one mini figure is disappointing but it does make sense for the scene. The balrog is….decent looking. Not horrible, not great. I do however like the dwarven architecture of the pillars with the colour  gradient technique that we saw first on the Barad-dur set that reflects the flames. 

Overall I'd say this is a decent set. I like that it can expand to show the size of the balrog but it can also fit into a smaller space. Hopefully this is a sign of more smaller LOTR sets are on their way in the future. The big sets are great but they do take up a lot of space and are very expensive.

Brick Balrog

I was excited to buy this set because it's the first time since reviving the LotR theme a set came out that isn't so big you need a new piece of furniture to display and so expensive you need a bank loan to purchase.

Hopefully now Lego will produce a Chronicles of Narnia set/theme to go with Hogwarts and Moria.

Fly You Fools!

I bought both this set and the Sherlock Holmes set. They cost the same, yet their value couldn't be more different. This set is a mech set with a bad frame, while the Holmes set is a storybook! The Balrog itself is decent, but this is what you are essentially paying for. The frame itself is superfluous. The flames are cheap looking and flimsy. There was every chance to enclose it all with a proper book cover. With it open there could have been inside the mountain. It's unfinished. Meanwhile the Holm s set has hidden rooms and moving pieces. It look great open and closed. I feel cheated by this set in comparison.

Not worth the money

All around it's a nice set just too expensive for what it is. It looks nice but I feel like there has been a significant decline in the quality of Lord of the Rings legos. I hope Lego better incorporates the wants of their customers into future releases. I would love to see more Lord of the Rings sets similar in quality to Barad-Dur or Rivendell. A large scale Minas Tirith would be beautiful but a more impressive remakes of helms deep or orthanc would be wonderful as well. lord of the rings is by far my favorite line of legos and I hope they can continue.

Alright

I was disappointed with the build of the Balrog - thought there could have been better detail throughout the build -  especially on its back for an adult set. The reuse of the wings from another set was disappointing. I felt this was really overpriced for the value received.

Anticipated set, disappointed

I've really gotten into Legos as an adult. I've built most of the Art sets, nearly all of the botanicals, a couple castles, and other miscellaneous smaller things.

I cannot stress enough how much I didn't like the experience of this build. There is SO MUCH negative space, I feel like the flames could be doing more. The build itself is surprisingly flimsy. As I was putting it together, some columns would pop off if I just turned it wrong. Somehow this feels flimsier than even some of the bouquets. Around half way through I just wanted to give up and felt like my eyes were crossing with all of the exceptionally tiny pieces that make up the Balrog.

That being said, it still looks cool. Since it is just going to sit on a shelf, the flimsiness won't really matter.

The Balrog are as a bit of a wonky build, I felt like some of the pieces would disconnect with a slight touch. The whip is a joke/ridculous. I also got a piece that makes the arm loose so he can't hold it upright. I was excited to see a smaller LOTR set (since running out of space) but definitely overpriced. But obviously got it since I have the other LOTR sets.
