About Gerard Bertrand

  • 17 areas in biodynamics, making Gérard Bertrand the world leader in biodynamic viticulture
  • +930 hectares of biodynamic vineyards, reflecting a commitment to sustainable viticulture
  • 4 generations of winegrowers, heirs to a know-how passed down from Paule to Emma and Mathias Bertrand

It was in 1975, in the vineyards of Château de Villemajou in the heart of the Corbières, that Gérard Bertrand carried out his first harvests and discovered his passion for wine. He perfected his training for twelve years alongside his father Georges Bertrand. Today we are the fourth generation of winegrowers, from Paule to Georges, then Gérard Bertrand and finally Emma & Mathias. Deeply attached to the values of performance and excellence learned on the rugby fields, Gérard Bertrand continues his quest: to reveal the best terroirs of his region and promote them throughout the world. It was in this spirit that he took over the family torch at Domaine de Villemajou after the accidental death of his father in 1987. Five years later, he created the Gérard Bertrand wine company to develop a range of wines from the South of France.

The Practice of Biodynamics

Gérard Bertrand and his team are convinced that viticulture in harmony with nature is the best way to bring terroir wines to the highest level of excellence. This cultivation method allows them to produce wines that represent all the nuances of the terroirs of the South of France. Biodynamic agriculture is similar to homeopathy for the vine. It consists of the use of compost and herbal teas made from biodynamic plants. Biodynamics takes into account all the natural elements surrounding the vine and draws on cosmic rhythms. The conversion of the estates to biodynamic agriculture began in 2002 at Domaine de Cigalus. Today, all the vineyards are cultivated biodynamically in accordance with DEMETER specifications. By 2023, all of its vineyards will have completed their conversion to certification, for the benefit of nature, winemaking teams, and wine consumers.

Sustainability

The group continues its commitment to a sustainable development policy, reaching an important milestone by carrying out a carbon footprint assessment. This proactive policy responds to growing consumer expectations as well as the global need to reduce the harmful effects of greenhouse gases on the climate. Furthermore, Gérard Bertrand is participating with photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand, founder of the Good Planet Foundation, in the "Objective 10,000 Trees" agroforestry project in Languedoc-Roussillon.

Crisp and Perfect for Summer!

This pairs well with so many things from grilled chicken to peaches, fish to salad. It's light, crisp and so smooth. Lovely bouquet. I read an article on this vineyard and was delighted to see the bottle in my local Sams. What a treat!
