(This review was collected as part of a promotion.) I was tired of waiting for warm water to reach an upstairs bathroom from the basement water heater. It seemed such a waste of energy and water to heat up all the lines while pouring water down the drain. Cold water for washing hands and brushing teeth is fine but shaving and cold saline nasal rinse is more than uncomfortable.

After considering the options (tank type vs. tankless) I started looking for a suitable heater to do the job at an acceptable price. Thanks to the mysteries of the internet, after searching a few building store sites, the Eccotemp popped up in a Walmart ad on my social media and within the hour it was ordered. (Probably the only time that has ever happened.) The unit had good reviews and it was competitively priced with free delivery - that was fast!.

I'd have preferred the 2.5 US gallon model for overall size inside a vanity but sometimes it's best to take what's offered at a lower price. The larger sizes would be better in an application where there's no other heater but in my case, the water in the tank is eventually replaced by heated water from the basement so it never gets uncomfortably cold.

As far as installation goes, electrical and plumbing experience is needed - whether yours or someone else's. It's advisable to consider the electrical circuit demand before purchasing. In my case there was no way to run a separate line so I had to tap into an existing circuit. That means putting a 12 Amp draw on a 15 Amp breaker that may already have a variety of loads. If the heater comes on at the wrong time you'll be down in the basement resetting a breaker.

To reduce the potential load problem, I moved a few appliances like a heating blanket and room A/C to a different circuit. In a bit of overkill, I also put the water heater on a timer to take advantage of cheaper overnight rates (7 PM to 7 AM) and reduce the chance of the heater kicking-in while vacuuming during the day. Even with the heat set to low, comfortable in the morning without mixing with cold water, the tank stays warm enough through the day to be pleasant. The tank must be well insulated.

The plumbing side can be tricky but getting your fittings from a supplier like Noble supplies ("free" expertise) and using plumber's pipe dope help if you're not experienced. Plumbing can be like building with Tinkertoys that leak. The only thing I found odd was the inlet and outlet fittings on the tank. It would make sense that braided lines would thread straight on without needing a coupling and nipple. Eccotemp probably has a reason but I didn't contact them so... maybe I missed something.

These DIY projects spin into a life of their own so, depending on the existing configuration of your vanity, plan on spreading a few hours work over a few days from start to completion. A lot depends on how many holes you need to knock in walls to reach wiring and if anyone decides that "Maybe this is a good time to paint the bathroom."

Overall, I'm delighted with the results and, so far, impressed with the Eccotemp tank.

I have a sprawling ranch. Which is both good and bad. It's nice to have so much space on one floor, but not so nice in that it takes a long time for the hot water to get to the last bathroom. That's okay for a shower as you can turn it on and do something else until the hot water gets there. However, I didn't like waiting for the hot water to come to the wash basin just to wash my hands. Hooking this up and plugging it in a 110 volt outlet took maybe five minutes. Problem solved. I get hot water in five seconds or less. Good product at a GREAT price.

Better than expected

Worked nicely in my garage. Positioned it on the floor under the sink. Had a little trouble getting the facet hoses connected. Had to push the tubes inside the heater's 1/2” connectors down so the facet hoses would thread on.

Hot water for garage

It works for what we wanted it for. But you have to have it almost turned up all the way to get really hot hot water. The plastic fittings I'm not pleased with, but so far everything works.

Mini Hot Water Tank

does not get hot enough at setting at 3/4 up it gets 100 degrees. Not hot enough to clean parts off tractor. Not happy with delay of returning 4 other heaters that I didn't order but was charged for 5 heaters. I expect Sam's club to pick them up. So far credit card has not been credited and heaters have not been picked up
