History of Frozen Meals
Frozen foods can be found in supermarkets across the globe. Centuries ago, many cultures froze their fresh caught food in ice to prevent spoiling during the cold winter months. In 1928, inventor Clarence Birdseye expanded on this technique and came up with a double-belt freezer that would flash freeze food at -13ºF. Fish, veggies, fruit and various cuts of meat were frozen using this method. Decades later, frozen dinners were introduced to the public, which gave consumers a convenient way to serve a meal.
How Are Frozen Entrees Made?
Frozen entrees consist of prepared foods, such as veggies, pasta, meat, fruit, poultry and fish. During production, a preservative is added to help maintain the quality of the dishes for longer storage. These pre-cooked meals are then packaged and vacuum-sealed to keep out air. Next, they're frozen using methods like cold air blasting, indirect contact with refrigerated plates or liquid immersion cooling. Finally, these frozen entrees are put in branded packaging and shipped to grocers around the world.
