Understanding TV Types
Before you start shopping for TVs, take a look at some of the features offered by the different types of television sets available today. Once you understand the advantages and capabilities of each TV type, it'll be easier to select the television that's perfect for you.
Plasma TVs, LED TVs, and LCD TVs
Some of the most popular TVs on the market today are high-definition television sets, a category that includes plasma televisions and LCD display sets. Both the plasma and LCD televisions can either be mounted on a wall or placed on a TV stand.
LCD and LED Televisions
LCD TVs are generally much lighter in weight and slimmer than plasma TVs. The sizes of LCD displays vary from 12 to 90 inches. One particular advantage that LCD TVs offer is that they are well suited for viewing in a bright room because of the availability of matte screens. Newer LCD displays have started to adopt LED backlighting instead of the usual fluorescent lighting, making them more energy efficient as well as making the picture clearer with higher contrast. LCDs, especially those lit by LED, are becoming extremely popular due to their wide variety of size options, great picture quality, and great visibility in both high and low light.
Plasma Televisions
The minimum size of a plasma television set is about 42 inches, so plasma TVs are ideal for those who love a big TV viewing experience. Plasma televisions offer the least limited viewing angle of their flat-screen counterparts, meaning that a plasma TV can be easily viewed from anywhere in the room. Plasmas also tend to have better contrast response than their LCD counterparts, because they are not dependent on an external light source. The downside of this is that the picture may not be as bright.
Connected Televisions and 3D TVs
Connected televisions, along with 3D HDTVs, are the latest trend in television sets, making it easy for you to surf the internet right from your TV. Having a TV connected to the internet can enhance your viewing experience and make it easier for you to stream movies and television shows right from the web. A 3D HDTV brings television to life, with its three-dimensional effects. With a 3D TV, you'll feel as if you're almost a part of the picture.
Combo Televisions
A combo TV is a television set that has a built-in DVD player. Because of the existence of DVRs and On Demand cable services, and the fact that modern LCD and LED TVs are extremely easy to hook up to peripherals, combo televisions are becoming less common, but some people prefer the simplicity of the combo set.
