What size computer monitor should I purchase?
The size of your computer monitor screen should be contingent on usage times and intended purposes. General monitor sizes come in 15”, 17”, 19”, and 21” sizes, yet Sam’s Club offers screens from 23”, 24”, 27”, and up! For consumers who use their computers regularly, it is recommended to get at least a 17” or 19” screen. For those doing design-related work on their computers, it would be very beneficial to purchase a larger screen (23” or larger).
LCD computer monitors are space-efficient, so unlike CRT monitors, the screen size will not have much influence on space efficiency. Wide-screen LCD monitors are also available for those who prefer the wider-angled viewing experience while using their computer.
The ‘viewable size’ of the screen is something to pay close attention to upon purchase. The viewable size refers to the actual images displayed on screen rather than the encasement of the entire monitor. Manufacturers’ viewable sizes may vary, so it is important to keep this in mind.
What is Dot Pitch in regards to a computer monitor?
Dot pitch is associated with how well displayed or how sharp images appear on the computer monitor. A monitor’s dot pitch refers to the amount of space (in millimeters) separating two adjacent pixels of the same color. Seek an LCD computer monitor hosting a dot pitch no larger than 0.25.
What is the importance of a computer monitor’s resolution?
An LCD monitor’s maximum resolution refers to the amount of pixels which can be displayed horizontally and vertically. It is good practice to seek an LCD monitor that offers a large viewing area, yet does not sacrifice viewing pleasure. For instance, a 19” monitor with a resolution of 1,280 x 1,024 is standard, allowing for easy viewing, and a 21” screen with a 1,600 x 1,200 is also standard for good viewing (these numbers are standardized -- optimal viewing may differ depending on manufacturer and model).
Computer Monitor Buying Tips
- A computer monitor’s ‘refresh rate’ refers to the number of times per second the screen is redrawn. This measurement is rendered in hertz. Look for a monitor with a refresh rate of at least 75 MHz the resolution you desire to run the monitor.
- Available controls will vary depending on the manufacturer and models. Sam’s Club has a variety of Dell and Samsung LCD computer monitors. Look for models that offer controls reflective of your desires.
