A DVD Player Introduction
Confused by the big DVD player selection? Not sure which type of DVD player is right for you? Let us help you out with an introduction to the technology and features behind DVD players.
A DVD player can be one of the central parts of a home entertainment system. Whether you like to check out the newest DVD releases at home, catch up on your favorite TV shows through DVD sets without commercial interruptions, or enjoy your most cherished movie classics time after time, you need a DVD player or a Blu-Ray player.
The basics: a DVD player plays DVDs (Digital Versatile Discs) and a Blu-Ray player plays Blu-Ray (high-definition format) discs. Both types of discs are similar in appearance to the familiar CD as well as the way in which information is coded on them. As opposed to a CD, however, a DVD can hold much more data and is great for the combination of high quality audio and video. The next step in technology, the Blu-Ray disc, is capable of holding even more information than a DVD.
A Blu-Ray disc needs to hold more information than a standard DVD because it provides high-definition picture and enhanced audio output. If you have a HDTV, a Blu-Ray disc will be able to create a watching experience that takes full advantage of your television's capabilities. Some Blu-Ray players are also able to play 3D content; you will, of course, need a 3D capable television (and any necessary eyewear!) to enjoy the full features of a 3D-ready Blu-Ray player. Though the latest technological features require compatible equipment, the newest players can also work with many kinds of older technology. For instance, a Blu-Ray player can play both standard DVDs and CDs. It may, in fact, be able to "upconvert" your older discs for a better viewing or listening experience.
How to Choose a DVD Player
At Sam's Club, you'll find a wide DVD player and Blu-Ray player selection. The type of DVD or Blu-Ray player that will be the best fit for your needs depends upon which features you'll be using, your budget, and the other components you currently have in your home entertainment system.
The most basic function of a DVD player is, of course, providing video and audio to your television monitor. Therefore, the picture quality you're seeking is one of the first things to consider as you decide what type of DVD player to buy. Nearly every modern DVD player will provide you with excellent video and audio output for a standard-definition television. On a high-definition TV, however, you might not get the picture quality you're looking for with a more basic DVD player; you may want to look instead for a Blu-Ray player.
Once you've determined whether you're looking for a DVD player or a Blu-Ray player, you might next want to think about the other features you'd like to have in your player. Do you want a remote control that seems particularly intuitive to you? Would you like front panel controls or front panel A/V inputs on your DVD player? What about any special connections that you need to get your new DVD player connecting with your television?
