Are These Colored Pencils Pre-sharpened?

The Crayola Colored Pencil Classpack provides you with pre-sharpened points that stay sharp longer and re-sharpen easier than most colored pencils. The thick, soft 3.3 mm cores of the colored pencils don't break easily under pressure. Along with the 14 color varieties of 462 colored pencils, the classpack also offers 12 handheld sharpeners to conveniently sharpen the pencils.

When Were Colored Pencils Invented?

The history of colored pencils is a bit murky. The pencils were often used for checking and marking for centuries but were not produced for creating art until the early 20th century. Around 1908, manufacturers began to make artist-grade colored pencils. By the mid 20th century, the pencils were very popular and widely produced for artists and school children alike.

Interesting Facts

Interestingly, one tree can create 300,000 Crayola pencils. That equals around 8,000 average-sized sets. The first use of colored wax mediums for drawing and writing dates all the way back to the Greek Golden Age. In New Jersey in 2009, the longest ever drawing using only colored pencils was documented at 500 yards long. The most expensive pencil ever created in the world contains 18-carat white gold and is wrapped in 240-year-old olive wood. The pencil sold for nearly $13,000. Crayola is the most prolific manufacturer of colored pencils as they make up to 600 million pencils every year.
